This helps to explain why faith without works is dead.

In my work with addicts, the need for fidelity and allegiance to Christ also has life and death consequences. Whereas the heroes of the of the faith faced death and dismemberment when they were faithful, addicts face it when they relapse. Not sure how to deal with that. There are Biblical examples of people and God's people piercing themselves with suffering because through their unfaithfulness. Perhaps suffering is inevitable, but suffering in faithfulness is great gain. Suffering for our unfaithfulness is like receiving a beating for doing wrong--nothing is gained.

"But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps." [1 Peter 2]

As a reminder, I like to put the word "active" before "faith" when reading Scripture or a teaching on Scripture.
