I encountered a quote on Alan Jacob's blog from the ending of Adams Roberts' novel The This. I haven't read the novel, but I deeply connected with the quote. The quote is about the particularity of love, how we don't love in general or in the abstract. We love the specific and particular.
So true. I’ve had people self-select out of relationship with me or our church because i chose to love certain folks very specifically ... they exit and say, “well, of course we’re supposed to love everyone” but they leave so as not to appear to condone anyone’s behavior. It’s just another take on what you’re saying here.
Wasn’t it Charles Schultz who summed it up well? He had Linus saying, I love humanity. It’s people I don’t like!”
(Btw, to be clear, I’ve probably done the same kinds of things over the years.)
Thanks for this. Vervaeke just went on Tim Ferriss and also shared about love. Will ponder more
