I struggle with the forensic aspects of Paul's gospel, which often occupy the center stage. What does it actually.mean that Christ becomes the curse for us? I wonder if this has to do with the issue of guilt. We know that we fall short of the Law, that we are flawed and sinful. We also know how guilt operates psychologically in human life. It gives fuel to sin and death by amplifying our powerlessness to do what's right. When we feel guilt in our human relationships, we are alienated from the other unless true forgiveness takes place and the relationship is restored. It also cripples the will to do right. Christ bears that guilt himself, the sin of all. To me that word from the cross, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do," encapsulates it. Christ bears the guilt and tells us, "it's done.". You are reconciled to God, and nothing stands in the way between you and the Father. I think the word that best describes what the cross does with sin is reconciliation rather than a forensic transaction. This, together with the Spirit's power, makes us new people.
