What really is this rock? Is it knowing the we are loved by God? I still say that "we are a mess", as Richard puts it. Yes, we need a rock and we are created by God to have others as our rock, to have others be the kingdom here on earth through support and empathy, by love. We need that, and we need to be that for others. Sadly, we are running far from this in modernity.. driving towards self-centeredness and not other-ness. We are a big mess.

I like thinking about the metaphors the Bible uses for God, and rock is one of my favorites because it’s kind of odd when you think about it. Rocks just sit there, they don’t move, they don’t change (obviously they erode if they’re there long enough, but they don’t change on a time frame we notice), they are everywhere. I think of God being my rock in that He is someone that doesn’t change, so if He said something it’s true and I can trust it when truth seems to be shifting. He promises to care for me and never forsake me, and that anchors me when I feel as though I’m all alone... I’m actually not.
