This resonates; I feel that a more contemplative approach to prayer--a need to experience God outside of dogma--saved my ailing faith at a crucial moment. My background was charismatic: very personal and experiential, but in a noisy way that ultimately became confusing to me. (I have a melancholic temperament, to tie in with Dan's comment, and the charismatic experiences took a dark turn). The impulse toward contemplation led me to the Catholic church (though only temporarily; a long story). Lots of people have taken a similar journey, it seems.

I'm wondering if different personality types will encounter this differently. I would think the Melancholy (using LaHayes temperaments) would zero in on this quickly, but the Phlegmatic or Choleric, not so much. Unfortunately, I'm Choleric/Phlegmatic. :(
