It seems like you are combining or confusing cataclysmic and apocalyptic, which is common in evangelical circles.

Apocalyptic literature has more to do with the unveiling of present spiritual realities that are hidden to the hearers than terror and destruction.

I may be wrong, so please clarify this for me.

Jewish theology took an apocalyptic turn at the time of the Exile and it wouldn't have taken much to figure out where the situation was headed in Jesus's time, what with the revolutionary fervor among many Jews. The events of 70 AD would prove him correct.
