I think outspoken author and theologian Robert Farrar Capon was onto something when he wrote this.

Admittedly, the deal of life in this world is often rotten enough: God in his crooked wisdom has not taken the disasters out of life, he has become our Life in the midst of the disasters.

This is really helpful. It reminds me of Jesus words in Luke 11 when he talks about how God can be trusted in prayer but there is a risk. In my reading of the passage Jesus does hint that there will be times when we feel like we've got a snake not a fish, scorpions and not eggs.
