I struggle with this every time I'm with my congregation and hearing the old religious words, yet I am thinking "what does 'spirit' mean when we're in a post-wind powered world?"
..and like Kierkegaard, did he see how the church was more of a barrier than an opening and exploration of this question? I look forward to this discussion.. but as of now, I look around and have opted myself to be religionless...for the most part. There are those gems out there, churches focused on this question and acting accordingly. It is hard not to get discouraged, sometimes angry, and overall disgusted with the church in this country.
Certainly, but imagine yourself in Bonhoeffer’s world where the majority of the “church” had either embraced Hitler’s fascism and anti-semitism or had passively accepted it. In fact, I think understanding this context to Bonhoeffer is essential to understanding his later writings.
I understand... but look who and what much of the church in this country supports...or passively accepts... who for president, the economic system, the attitudes towards the marginalized...towards war... there is lots just here at home.

Bingo. That is the question, my friend. Thanks for zero-ing in on it. Appreciate your perspectives and look forward to what's to come in this series.
