Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this podcast, and what really excited me was your revelation that you like the show “Alone”! I love that show and have watched every episode up until this past week (I’m usually a week behind for reason to follow). However, no one else in my family likes it and I have to watch “Alone” alone. 😂 I find it VERY fascinating for many reasons. By far the best and most genuine reality TV ever made. When you mentioned it, I literally LOL’d because my family gives me a hard time about liking it so much.
The other show I have to watch “alone” is The Bear. It’s very intense, but I find it also to be amazing, particularly the first two seasons. It’s so clever and well done, but I understand it isn’t for everyone. But I wonder if you’ve watched it. If not, I think you’d like it. I’m interested in your opinion, Dr. Beck.
I haven't watched The Bear, but I hear good things. I'll have to check it out.
The two things I love about Alone: First, the survival skills are simply astounding, from foraging, to hunting, to fishing, to shelter building, to trapping, and on and on. Really, really talented people. And second, the psychological aspect of being alone, how people cope with it, or fail to cope. It's especially interesting how, once alone, many people begin to reckon with their past, old regrets, pain, lost opportunities. It's very similar to the experience of contemplative prayer, how when we sit in silence the first thing that hits you is the brokenness of yourself.
Agreed on everything about Alone. The one thing that really astonishes me is when someone taps out in the first couple of days because of some emotional or psychological reason. It is just hard to believe that they didn’t consider how that was going to be. But to your point, I suppose the impact of truly being alone is difficult to anticipate.
Just finished listening and I enjoyed it a lot. I am going to read Hunting Magic Eels, which might help push me from a deconstructed faith that is very rational, focused on psychology as a social worker/therapist, and is extremely grounded in morality and serving others. The magical thinking that I was raised with as a fundamentalist - believing the Genesis story as real, for instance....or the way they talk about the personal relationship with Jesus will be left behind forever. Not seeing prayer work, has led me to define prayer as a tool we use for our own psychological reasons, and there isn't really magic in that. So where do I go from here to find it? Nature, for sure creates a sense of awe....and maybe the Celtic spirituality will be helpful.. We'll see.
I’m excited to hear that episode!

Anyway, glad to meet another fan!
