I guess we don't like that the wind blows where it pleases, and that beauty comes to us unbidden. I guess we prefer a hard magic systematic theology, a religion of Mammon/capitalism and Tekton/science to control our environments, exploit the created order, and ease our anxieties. I guess we don't like that God is Mystery. I guess we don't like that God took on blood, sweat, urine, cross, nails, and death. I guess that we don't like that sometimes God is taking a nap in the boat while we are staring at the tossing waves.
I just read this to my husband Jim, a "recovering" Southern Baptist. He responded in agreement:
"If you're not willing to do the work but just want someone to fix things for you, then you're not following Jesus. As Anne Lamott said, 'The opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainly.'"

“God is not a tool to get us something we want.”
So THAT’S what Mic Jagger meant! 😂
Wasn’t anticipating stumbling on an essay discussing Christian enchantment and Brandon Sanderson, but I sure am glad I did. Thanks for the great read.
