I get what you’re saying here, but what does he mean when he says, “I’m not suggesting you pray about sins that do lead to death”? Why is there a prohibition against any kind of intercession?

Close to 50 years ago, I heard it put this way. There are the "hot" sins, committed in the passion and temptations of the moment. Then there are the "cold" sins, born as the result of deliberate, "cold" calculation. The difference between first and second degree murder. Dante got it, that's why Satan's punishment is to be encased in the ice, alone and impotent with his murderous thoughts.
