What really struck me about "break the arm of the wicked" was not the call for their death, but their impotence. It is like the Psalmist is saying "Take their power to harm away, violently and permanently if you must." As much as I hate violence, I have grown to understand that it is sometimes a necessary tool when meeting some types of evil.
I have struggled with Psalms for sure, but the pattern I’ve come to recognize, generally, is the first parts of many a psalm express the authors feelings and then the latter parts express the authors thinking. Basically, “I feel this, but I believe this”. That helps.
